Ghosts and Christianity

It's that time of year. All the Halloween hoopla and scary ghost investigations on T.V.

I can never seem to get a clear answer on this: as Christians, are we allowed to believe in ghosts? Where is the proof that they do exist? Where is the proof that they don't?

Lately, I've been watching a show called "Ghost Adventures" where a group of guys go into a haunted place and investigate. I have been hooked on watching these kinds of shows for quite a few years now, and sometimes I wish I was in their shoes so I could get a sense of what they're experiencing. I personally have not had an encounter with a ghost, but so many have. At least, that's what television shows want you to believe. How do we know when those noises on the shows are real? The thing that usually gets me is when there is more than one person being a witness to the encounter. What if, my brothers and sisters, ghosts are real? Not all ghosts have to be evil. Not all ghosts have to be good. As Christians we can experience evil spirits and demons from Satan. Is there even such thing as a GOOD spirit? That's where the question of ghosts on the earth come in.

There is no way to be 100% sure of what happens when we die until we actually die. Hope that was obvious enough for you.

I'm clueless as to what's considered right when it comes to being a Christian and having slight interest in ghosts.

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Wow. K. good to know im not the only one who wonders this! I watch Ghost Adventures too, but my favorite is still Ghost Hunters because they go in there trying to DISPROVE hauntings, but sometimes even they come out with evidence that they can't quite explain. For me it's actually a really tough question- can Christians believe in ghosts? is it right for us? So many times i get the common response from other christians that what we are experiencing as "ghosts" are really just demons trying to confuse us or whatever. But then what about the non-malevolent spirits? the "good" ones? how do we explain those? im not saying that i've had a personal experience with ghosts, but i have relitives that firmly believe they have. and just as you said- where is the proof? that they either do or dont exist? there really isn't any. so who's to say that what happens when we die there isn't some state in which one might be a "ghost" because from what i understand, most times ghostly activity is just the decesased person's energy remaining in the area. Wheter or not that's really true or not, i dont know, but i do know that i wouldn't leave the possibilit out. And i also wouldn't put the stamp on all "ghostly activity" as being demonic, because i dont believe that all of it is.

Krista, Interesting question... As Christians, I think we can seek the truth about any and all questions we have for life. I'm thankful we have the Word to help us. These verses came to mind.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12

"And to which of the angels has he ever said, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."? Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?" Heb 1:13-14

Truth speaks of the reality of angels sent to minister to the saints. It also identifies Satan and his demons that bring fear, and seek to deceive, steal, kill and destroy all that belongs to the light.

Many have said that Halloween is Satan's holiday. We do know that November 1st is All Saint's Day-Reformation Day- a celebration to remember those Saints who have lived and await us in heaven. Leave it to the forces of darkness to try and destroy Christian celebrations. Gospel truth: Yahweh is Lord of the Harvest, Almighty God.

As far as Ghost shows, Haunted Houses, Scarey Movies.... Ghosts...etc. as humans, we want to "know" more. We are simply curious. Satan's great scheme from the beginning was to tempt Eve by saying "... your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

When you know evil... does it not bring fear? Adam and Eve went and hid.

I have also heard it said, we should not try and figure out "evil" or even "know" evil with our minds. God gives us His Spirit to discern evil... I have even wondered if "investigating" evil such as in crime shows is wise... so many watch NCSI etc. and I have too. I ask myself not is that bad, but is that the best for me?

Hollywood likes to portray ghosts as good (Casper the Friendly Ghost) or at best, benign, we must remember Satan delights to disguise himself as an angel of light. He is the master of deception.

The Lord says, "Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, anything worthy of praise, think about these things..." Phil 4:8

Thanks Mrs. Danielson (I think that's you...can't think of any other Mrs. D in my life!)

Now I might be mixing up words you are saying -- so, could there be ghosts in this world? They just aren't considered "good"? I'm not necessarily trying to distinguish the difference between good ghosts and bad ghosts, but just trying to figure out if they overall exist.

My Mom and I were having a conversation tonight, and she's right on the same page as me. She often wonders if ghosts are real, and how the whole "system" of Heaven works. If when we die, is Heaven considered a "waiting room" for when Jesus makes His second coming and then we are sent to the new creation He has for us?

Like I said, we can't be 100% sure of what happens after we die until we actually experience it. I can't say I've heard too many people making communicating with those of us on earth about what it's like to die and what the process of that looks like.

AH! Curiosity is just killing me right now! Sometimes you just have to wonder what's going to happen afterwards. My mind is exploding with desire to know.
